Research

Research is central to the vision of TAPMI. We aspire to be one of India’s leading business schools in management research. We would like to be distinguished by creating an enabling ecosystem for research work, training, facilitating outstanding researchers, and designing interventions yielding social, cultural, and economic benefits to the community.

Research Vision: We aim to be among India’s top 10 Business Schools in management research.

TAPMI facilitates publishing research outcomes such as articles in peer-reviewed journals, cases, books, and book chapters. It also expects faculty to migrate towards high quality research outcomes such as ABDC A* and A.

Research Support

Research Database

TAPMI subscribes to leading academic databases like Proquest and, Ebscohost, to support research. It has a repository of more than 10 corporate databases, and maintains more than 10 memberships of different organizations to access business cases and other reading materials. TAPMI has the largest Finance lab in India (https://www.tapmi.edu.in/campus-facilities/educational-facilities/)

Professional Development Fund (PDF):

  • Eligible faculty members can avail Rs.1,25,000/- per year under PDF to meet their academic development requirements, including specified categories of research support (such as data collection, attending conferences, etc.)  The PDF can be carried forward for a period of five years on a rolling basis.

 

Faculty Development Fund:

  • This fund acts as an additional source to support exceptional research requests, such as the requirement of research support for newly joined faculty members not covered under PDF and other exceptional cases that may arise occasionally.

 

TAPMI Academic Research Grant (TARG):

  • TARG is an additional mechanism to meet research funding requirements (beyond PDF) to support faculty members (deserving cases/high-impact research). There is provision to support five projects per annum with a maximum outlay of Rs 100000 per project.

 

Workload support:

  • TAPMI strives to limit the teaching hours of early career faculty and emerging researchers to 90 hours. The Faculty Review Team seeks to provide a term off for research where possible. The institute has created an innovative track system to support research.

Research Promotion Committee (RPC)

TAPMI has constituted the RPC, a faculty-driven committee to develop a strong research culture. It serves as TAPMI’s vehicle for the promotion of research. The mandate of RPC is to promote academic research and research-related activities and build a strong culture of research at TAPMI comparable to that of the best management institute in the world. Research Ethics Committee (REC)

With the growing focus on research, faculty members at TAPMI must adhere to the highest standards of research ethics. The purpose of REC is to advise faculty members on research integrity, best practices on publications, and other aspects related to research ethics. A faculty member needs to get prior approval from REC that includes any of the following three cases:

  • Using PDF/Grant from TAPMI
  • TAPMI students, faculty, and staff are involved as research subjects and
  • Research proposals of students of the doctoral program.

Policy Note @ TAPMI on Predatory Journals

Individual faculty researchers at TAPMI have a general responsibility to be wary of not submitting work to predatory journals. Some criteria to identify such journals may be those with abnormally high acceptance rates, abnormally speedy processing, journals that spam researchers’ email inboxes with emails soliciting academic work for early/specific publishing, etc.

TAPMI has adopted Cabell’s Blacklist as the reference list of predatory journals to be avoided. The link to the list (available internally only) is: www.cabells.com (Blacklist)

International Faculty

TAPMI collaborates with the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) in Manipal and actively recruits international faculty to enhance its academic environment. The institution offers positions across various disciplines. Prospective candidates can find detailed information on vacancies and application procedures for MAHE’s official careers. 

MAHE has a structured policy for international faculty recruitment, outlining salary packages and benefits. For most disciplines, the starting salary is USD 25,000 per annum, while language teachers have a salary of USD 14,000 per annum. The policy also details provisions for accommodation and living expenses. 

The university hosts diverse international faculty members who contribute to its global academic environment. Notable international faculty include Dr. Madhu Veeraraghavan from Australia, serving as Pro Vice-Chancellor and Professor at TAPMI; MAHE’s commitment to internationalization is further evidenced by its Office of International Affairs & Collaborations (OIAC), which facilitates global partnerships and collaborations. The OIAC is the central hub for international relations, supporting faculty and student exchanges and fostering cooperation with partner universities worldwide.

TAPMI also invites outstanding teachers, researchers, and executives from the industry to apply for Adjunct and Guest Faculty Positions and even sabbatical positions at its Manipa. The sabbatical can be from 1-3 months to 24 months. Such positions require one to stay at Manipal during their tenure, and their functions would include:

  • Teaching postgraduate management students.
  • Conducting joint research with TAPMI faculty and publishing papers.
  • Contribute to the institute’s curriculum development process.
  • Coordinating and conducting Executive training programs.

The remuneration payable matches the best in practice.

Doctoral Program

SMIC – The Student Managed Investment Course (SMIC) at TAPMI is a unique initiative providing MBA students with hands-on investment experience. It is an elective for MBA students and a core course for MBA – Banking and Financial Services (BKFS) students. The course bridges academic learning with real-world financial decision-making by allowing students to manage a seed fund over a year, gaining exposure to investment management, portfolio construction, and risk assessment. Students attend workshops by industry professionals, develop investment strategies, and present regular portfolio reviews. By integrating theory with practice, SMIC prepares students for equity research, portfolio management, and investment banking careers, making it a flagship experiential learning program at TAPMI.

BrandScan- the flagship market research event of TAPMI, Manipal, has evolved over three decades into a premier platform for experiential learning and business insights. Established in 1993, BrandScan has grown to become one of India’s most prominent B-school-led research initiatives, blending academic rigor with real-world consumer engagement. What sets BrandScan apart is its ability to capture authentic consumer insights through immersive and interactive methodologies. While it is well-known for its innovative use of disguised games to elicit unbiased responses, its research framework extends far beyond. It incorporates a systematic, multi-phase approach, guided by industry experts and leading market research firms like Nielsen and TNS, ensuring that data collection, analysis, and interpretation meet the highest standards. Conducted in two distinct formats—semi-urban in Manipal and urban in Bengaluru—the event effectively bridges diverse demographic segments, offering companies deep market penetration and valuable consumer behavior insights. Over the years, BrandScan has collaborated with over 170 organizations, including industry giants like ITC, Titan, Apple, and Amul, delivering over 350 research projects that have influenced branding, product positioning, and marketing strategies. LADC – The Leadership Assessment & Development Center (LADC) TAPMI enhances students’ leadership competencies, giving them a competitive edge in the industry. Focused on developing transformational leaders for VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) environments, LADC follows a structured three-step process. First, students undergo psychometric assessments to identify leadership traits and competency gaps, with faculty advisors providing personalized insights. Samnidhy is the Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) of TAPMI, a unique initiative providing students with hands-on experience in portfolio management, investment decision-making, and financial analysis. Established as a registered firm, Samnidhy is entirely managed by a board comprising students, who run the fund with professionalism and accountability. With Assets Under Management (AUM) of INR 4.8 million, Samnidhy operates like a real-world investment fund, enabling students to apply theoretical concepts in live market conditions. The fund follows a structured investment process, including rigorous research, risk assessment, and strategic allocation across asset classes. The student board conducts stock evaluations, presents investment recommendations, and ensures prudent fund management. Samnidhy serves as a bridge between academic learning and industry practice, equipping students with critical financial skills that are highly valued in corporate finance and investment domains. The experience gained through managing this fund prepares students for investment banking, equity research, portfolio management, and risk analysis careers.
