Doctoral Programs

TAPMI’s PhD program is a comprehensive and research-intensive journey designed to develop scholars across all major disciplines of management, including Marketing, Finance, Operations and Decision Sciences, Information Systems and Analytics, Strategy, Human Resources, Organizational Behavior, and Communication Strategies. The program nurtures intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and thought leadership, equipping scholars with the skills needed to contribute meaningfully to academia and industry.

With a structured curriculum, scholars engage in rigorous coursework, research proposal development, and extensive thesis work. TAPMI provides a dynamic research ecosystem with mentorship from distinguished faculty, access to international research networks, financial support, and cutting-edge resources like databases and finance labs. Scholars are encouraged to publish in high-impact journals and present at prestigious conferences. Through research workshops, interdisciplinary collaboration, and structured academic guidance, TAPMI fosters a culture of excellence, ensuring PhD scholars gain the expertise and confidence to drive meaningful advancements in management research and education.

PHD Program Structure

TAPMI’s PhD program follows a structured and rigorous approach, ensuring that scholars receive comprehensive research, pedagogy, and academic publication training. The program is typically completed in 3.5 to 4 years, progressing through distinct stages, as outlined below:

Duration

First 6–12 months

Scholars undertake doctoral-level coursework to build a strong research foundation.

Courses include:

  • Research Proposal Writing
  • Research Methods (Quantitative & Qualitative Approaches)
  • Teaching Pedagogy
  • Research Ethics
  • Specialization-Specific Electives & Doctoral Seminars

Key Milestones

  1. Formation of the Doctoral Advisory Committee (DAC): Guide, Co-Guide(s), Internal & External DAC members, and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) are assigned.
  2. Research Proposal Development
    • Idea Generation → Concept Note → Literature Review → Initial Draft
    • Pre-DAC Meeting & Knowledge Seminar to refine research questions.
    • Protocol Defense – Formal defense of the research proposal.
  3. Progress Review (Every 6 Months)
    • Scholars meet with their DAC for progress updates and feedback.

Duration

2nd to 4th Year

Scholars transition into full-scale research, collecting and analyzing data, developing theoretical frameworks, and refining methodologies.

Regular interaction with faculty mentors and research groups to ensure research quality.

Key Milestones

  1. Data Collection & Analysis
    • Conduct literature reviews, pilot studies, pre-tests, and main studies.
    • Engage in primary or secondary data collection and statistical analysis.
  2. Research Paper Publications & Conferences
    • Scholars must publish at least two research papers in SCOPUS-listed (≥Q3) journals, with the scholar as the first author.
    • Present research at two academic conferences (national/international).
  3. Progress Review (Every 6 Months)
    • DAC reviews research progress and provides critical feedback for improvement.
  4. Pre-thesis Submission Synopsis Presentation: Scholars present entire thesis including findings to faculty and DAC for final feedback.
  5. Final Thesis Submission & Viva Voce:
    • Scholars submit the finalized thesis for review and evaluation.
    • A final viva voce examination is conducted before an expert panel.

Financial Support

TAPMI provides comprehensive financial assistance to PhD scholars, ensuring they have the necessary resources to focus on high-quality research and academic excellence. The financial support includes monthly stipends, research funding, and professional development grants structured as follows:

PhD scholars enrolled under the T. A. Pai Scholarship receive a monthly stipend to support their academic journey:

  • First Two Years: ₹35,000 per month
  • Next Two Years: ₹40,000 per month

This stipend helps scholars manage their living expenses, research-related activities, and professional development during their PhD journey.

TAPMI recognizes the importance of cutting-edge research tools, conferences, and academic networking in a scholar’s career. To facilitate this, each PhD scholar is provided with:

  • ₹1,00,000 (₹1 lakh) for four years of professional development and research support.
  • This fund can be utilized for: 
    • Data Collection – Surveys, interviews, experimental studies, etc.
    • Stimuli Design – Creating research materials for experiments.
    • Access to Research Databases – Subscription to SCOPUS, Web of Science, and other premium databases.
    • Conference Participation – National and international conference registration, travel, and accommodation.
    • Workshops and Training Programs – Skill-building programs, statistical software training, and research methodology workshops.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA AND ADMISSION PROCESS

Applicants seeking admission to the PhD program MUST have the eligibility as follows:

  • An aggregate of 60 % or an equivalent grade in master’s, in any of the following, from an institution/university recognized by UGC / respective regulatory body 
    • 1 year / 2-semester master’s degree, after a 4-year / 8-semester Bachelor’s Degree program 
    • 2-year / 4-semester master’s degree after 3-year / 6-semester Bachelor’s Degree program 
    • 2-year / 4-semester master’s degree after 4-year / 8-semester Bachelor’s Degree program 
  • An aggregate of 75 % or an equivalent grade in 4 year / 8-semester Bachelor’s Degree program from an institution/university recognized by UGC / respective regulatory body 
    • However, PhD applicants with bachelor’s degrees are eligible to apply under full-time category only 

Applicants with Master’s or bachelor’s degrees or equivalent from International Universities will have to produce a certificate of recognition/equivalency from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) / Commonwealth Universities / International Association of Universities (IAU) / Accredited by an assessment & accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution; as equivalent to the corresponding Indian degrees for the purpose of higher studies.

Prospective PhD candidates need to complete the online application form available on the TAPMI website. The application requires:

  • Academic transcripts and certificates (Undergraduate & Postgraduate).
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP) outlining research interests, motivation, and career goals.
  • Research Proposal or concept note on a proposed area of study.
  • Resume (CV) detailing academic and professional achievements.

The admission process involves multiple stages to assess the candidate’s academic potential and research aptitude:

Step 1: Screening of Applications

  • Shortlisting is based on academic records, research proposal quality, and professional experience.

Step 2: Micro-presentation on research proposal and Personal Interview (PI) 

  • Shortlisted candidates are invited for an online or in-person interview with the PhD Admissions Committee.
  • The micro-presentation and interview assess: 
    • Understanding of research methodologies and theoretical frameworks.
    • Feasibility and originality of the proposed research idea.
    • Candidate’s motivation, commitment, and alignment with TAPMI’s research ecosystem.

Step 3: Final Selection & Offer Letter

  • Selected candidates receive an official offer of admission, detailing the program structure, financial support, and enrollment formalities.

TAPMI follows an annual admission cycle with the following key dates:

  • Application Opens: March – April 
  • Shortlisting & Interviews: June
  • Final Offer & Registration: July – August 
  • Program Commencement: September

Eligibility for PhD & Doctoral Programs

Applicants must have a master’s degree with 60% aggregate (or equivalent) or a bachelor’s degree with 75% aggregate from UGC-recognized institutions. Eligibility varies based on degree duration and structure. Bachelor’s degree holders can apply only under the full-time PhD category.

Submit a complete application to phd.tapmi@manipal.edu, including the filled form, educational certificates, work experience details, updated CV, and a 5-7-page research proposal. Format appropriately and submit it as complete. Next stages of the admission process are conducted with shortlisted candidates at Manipal.

PhD Scholarship at TAPMI

TAPMI offers fellowships for doctoral scholars with full tuition fee waivers and stipends of ₹35,000-₹40,000 over four years. Eligibility requires meeting doctoral committee standards. Commitment and progress are essential for continued support, ensuring a robust and rewarding academic journey for dedicated research scholars.
